Federal Representatives Taste the Positive Impacts of Chaplaincy

Across the country, school chaplains continue to meet the immediate and growing needs of students and families within our local communities. One of the ways they do this is through chaplain run Breakfast Clubs which occur daily in schools across Australia.

The combined efforts of school chaplains in over 3,000 public schools has seen more than 3.7 million meals served to students by a National School Chaplaincy Association (NSCA) Chaplain, of which YouthCARE is a proud founding member.

This week YouthCARE’s CEO and Chair of the NSCA, Tamsyn Cullingford, represented our communities in Federal Parliament, advocating to MPs and Senators about the incredible work these chaplains are doing in school communities across Western Australia.

Breakfast Clubs run by school chaplains bring more 'to the table' than just feeding hungry bellies

This advocacy visit culminated in the NSCA hosting a 'Breakfast Club' at Parliament in partnership with the Parliamentary Friends of School Chaplaincy. The event simulated how breakfast would be served in the schoolyard, providing cheese toasties and juiceboxes to politicians, just as our chaplains do with students every morning. The members of parliament in attendance were educated on the importance of supporting students within the school environment through their practical needs, as well as holistically by supporting the social, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing of young people and their families.

The event also saw Members and Senators provided with an informative box of 'Chaplaincy Crunch' cereal, which highlighted to government the supportive role of chaplains and their breakfast clubs within the school community, and the integral impact federal support through the National Student Wellbeing Program is having on the lives of Australian young people.
