YOUTHCARE Chaplains spreading the RUOK? message in WA schools

YouthCARE Chaplains across Western Australia know all to well the importance of the words are you okay?

That’s why on national RUOK? Day (Thursday, September 10) YouthCARE chaplains are getting behind the initiative by running programs and information sessions to encourage the school community to have regular conversations and check in on their friends.

In it’s seventh year, the annual RUOK? Day is an initiative to get people to ask others how they are going and lend support. The day can be the opportunity to start a conversation, as well as celebrate the people who already do that on a regular basis.

YouthCARE Chief Operating Officer Michael Norman says that as pastoral care workers, YouthCARE chaplains spend every week speaking to hundreds of staff, students and families, listening and asking simple questions like are you ok?

“Organisations like YouthCARE can, and do, have a huge positive impact on young people’s lives and ultimately on society as a whole,” Mr Norman said.

“The presence of a school chaplain is vital to providing support to young people on their journey.”

So far this year YouthCARE chaplains, working in more than 600 public schools across WA, have had more than 80,000 formal conversations with students, staff and the entire school community. Family relationships, peer relationships and mental health have been the biggest issues discussed.

Coodanup College YouthCARE Chaplain Melissa Pike is part or the school’s student services team running their all day RUOK? Day celebrations.

“RUOK? Day is important to Coodanup College because it teaches the kids that they are important and to remember to genuinely check in with their friends and family with the simple words are you okay?”

Melissa said the day brought the community together for fun, laughter and unity.

“We’ve had fun and games, live radio cross, food vans, dress ups and a rapper performing an inspirational performance to the school and we’ve all taken the time to ask are you okay,” Melissa said.
