CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

SRE Facts

Every week a dedicated band of voluntary Christian Religious Education Teachers have been delivering over 1000 classes in over 100 public schools throughout Western Australia.

Provision has been made since 1893 for this kind of Religious Education in State Schools. YouthCARE, then The Churches' Commission on Education, has been coordinating this on behalf of its member churches since 1971.

Voluntary CRE Teachers are drawn from a wide range of Christian denominations, but teach an agreed Christian syllabus that is published by our sister organization in Victoria, Access Ministries. Details of this syllabus can be found in this DOWNLOAD (Parent Overview CRE Syllabus). This new brochure for Parents gives a great overview of the content of our Program.

There are thirteen Christian denominations that are members of YouthCARE but many more are associated with us through our CRE program. When members of those churches volunteer to become CRE Teachers they must be endorsed or approved by their local church leaders as persons suitable for this ministry and agree to do their voluntary work as representatives of all the churches in their local area.

Voluntary CRE Teachers are trained as practitioners of the syllabus so that they are skilled in telling the stories of the Christian faith as well as managing children in a classroom setting. They are also screened by the Department of Child Protection and have current Working With Children cards.
